Meditation, Alan Watts and a Tarot Card Reading

I haven’t posted anything for awhile, so I want to apologize to my followers for that. It seems as though just when I get going and things in my life are getting ironed out, I get kicked in the throat. Not to be entirely pessimistic, but this cycle has been going on for most of my life. I’m not sure why and this is something that I’ve been meditating on nearly every day during my absence.

An online friend introduced me to a man by the name of Alan Watts. He has passed on, but his videos are still quite prevalent on You Tube and I have been listening to them almost every day since he was made known to me. He was a Buddist with Hindu leanings and I’m not, but what he talks about makes a lot of sense to me, not to mention the fact that listening to him makes me feel like I’ve just let go a breath that I’ve been holding for years and years. This has to be a positive thing.

Ok now on to my Tarot Reading of the Day:

The first card I drew was the Ace of Wands.

ace-of-wands

This card represents new beginnings. You’ve planted your proverbial wand in the ground and from here there are many roads to choose. Since this card was drawn in the first position of a 4 card draw, my guides are telling me that this represents a point of time in the recent past. I’m not sure when. It could have been on Saturday when I finally committed to cleaning out my mother’s house. She died in October of 2015 of multiple heart attacks attributed to a congenital heart defect and COPD. Her death has been particularly hard on me, but on Saturday a friend of mine went with me to her house and I was able to get quite a bit packed up for donation to a local charity. This may be my new beginning. This is quite a positive card. My intuition is telling me that this card is telling me that I’m going in the right direction.

The second card that I drew was the Eight of Cups.

eight-of-cups

This card symbolizes diving deep into the subconscious or searching spiritually. Diving deep into the waters of your belief system or deep self examination. It’s highly introspective. This is representative of what I said above about meditating daily and listening to Alan Watts. I’m trying to change myself for the better. In my humble opinion, if we don’t change, we get stale and our spirit suffers and grows small and still. I, for one, want my spirit to be alive and I want to lean into my spiritual gifts not only so that I can help myself, but also so that I can help others. This card represents where I am at the present moment.

The third card I drew was the reversed Five of Pentacles.

five of pentacles

This card shows a woman who is seemingly trapped in a bubble of her own inner pain. She doesn’t see the beauty around her because she is too focused on her own pain. However, I drew this card in reverse. So the reverse of this is true for me in the near future. This is a positive card in the reverse position (It can be seen as positive in the upright position as well. Showing a person that they are trapped in their own pain. Sometimes it’s good to get perspective on a situation so that we can move in a positive direction.) I hope that my world will open up and that I will have a chance to help others get out of their pain or at least begin to manage it. I believe this is one of the reasons I have incarnated in this place at this time: to help people ascend into the best version of themselves that they can be (This goes for myself as well.)

The fourth and last card I drew was the major arcana card, The Sun.

the-sun

This is a very positive card and since it is situated in the last position in the four card draw, it represents not my near future, but a future that is possible for me further down my time line. It is showing me that a dawn will come after the darkest period of my life I’ve experienced so far in my life. It indicates fulfillment as well. All I’ve really ever wanted out of my life is to be as content and happy as I can in whatever situation I find myself in. It’s hard to be an optimist when all you see around you is darkness and pain. I know that all too well. However, this card gives me hope that the sun will again shine on mine and my daughter’s lives and that our deepest heart’s desires will be fulfilled. This rekindles my hope, which has been suffering for the last year and a half (basically since my mother died).

I hope this post was interesting to ya’ll. If there are any questions or help that I can give, please comment and I will answer you as quickly as I can. I realize that what’s going on in my life isn’t really that interesting or that important to anyone else but me, however I hope that the tarot card meanings were informative and helpful to ya’ll.

I want to thank everyone who comments and follows me. It is truly an honor.

Blessed Be.

Dark Moon Magick

Dark Goddess Hecate

“The Earth began to bellow, trees to dance
And howling dogs in glimmering light advance
Ere Hekate came.”

Dark Goddess Hecate’s celebration day is November 16

The Goddess Hecate was a deity of the night, crossroads, life and death. She was called Most Lovely One, the Distant One, Queen of the World of Spirits, goddess of witchcraft. To the Thracians especially, Hecate was goddess of the Moon, the dark hours, and the Underworld. Midwives were connected with her.

Some myths say Hecate was the daughter of the Titans Tartaros and Night; other versions say of Perseus and Asteria (Starry-Night), or of Zeus and Hera. We do know her worship did not originate in Greece. One of her sacred animals was the toad, a symbol of conception. She was called the goddess of transformation as she ruled over the various passages of life, and could change forms or ages.

Hecate was considered to be the third aspect of the Moon, the Hag or Crone (Carrier of Wisdom). The Greeks called Hecate the Hag of the Dead. (The word “hag” may have come from the Egyptian word “heq”, meaning a matriarachal ruler who knew magickal words of power.)

An ally of Zeus, she was accompanied by a pack of hounds.

An aspect of the Amazon goddess, Hecate’s chariot was pulled by dragons. Her symbols were the key and the cauldron. The women who worshipped her often stained their palms and soles with henna. Her festivals were held at night by torchlight. Every year on the island of Aegina in the Saronic Gulf, a mysterious festival was held in her honor.

Black Candle Magic…

The black candle is very powerful. It is one of the most protective colors. It can be used to bring a person back down to earth. It can also be used in various ways to uncover secrets. It can be used in meditation, to help us find the light within the dark. It stabilizes and awakens greater responsibility. It is most effective when burnt with a white candle. Too much black can manifest depression.

Use Black candles for magic with…

The God, New moon magic, Male energy, banishing Magic, Diet, Protection; Repelling negativity; Binding, shapshifting. Use black candles for mirror Scrying. Traditional candles for the dead during remembrance rituals at Samhain (Halloween)

Black Salt

Black Salt is used in banishing, binding rituals or to quiet bothersome neighbors. Magically used to remove negative energies from items, or places. Often used to remove hexes and other harmful or negative energies. Cleanse your magical implements in a bath of black salt and water… and then wash in a bath of sea salt to purify the item and allow in only positive energies.

A PERFECT ingredient for filling ‘Binding Poppets’ for a powerful outcome. Place a black candle in a pile of black salt for Samhain Remembrance rituals, sprinkle Ouiji Boards with Black Salt before use.

*Making a black mirror at home

Here is a simple method for making a black mirror at home.

Buy a picture frame, complete with the glass.
Pick up some black paint at the craft/hardware shop, best use gouache paint, acrylic or oil based.
Make sure you have a paintbrush!
Disassemble the frame and lay the glass on a piece of newspaper.
Paint the backside of the glass with the black paint and let dry. (I recommend 2-3 coats.)
After it is all dry, if there is any need clean the outer part of the glass with winnow cleaner to make it extra shiny and pretty.
Place the painted glass into the picture frame the unpainted glass side facing outwards.
You can glue various magical items to your black magic picture frame, like herbs, crystals, stones, shells, feathers etc
Use with black candle, slightly tilted for candle Scrying, especially effective when the Sun is in Scorpio, October.

Esbats

While the sabbats are solar festivals that celebrate and honor the Sun, God and male energy, esbats are rituals celebrated by witches and pagans to revere the moon, and the feminine energy represented by her lunar cycle.

Esbats, derived from the French esbattre, meaning “to frolic,” are gatherings or solitary rituals held every month on the night of that month’s full moon, to worship the goddess as represented by the moon. Some groups and solitaries may hold their esbats on the night of the new moon, however. It is also the correct time to hold an esbat, and some motivated groups or persons may hold rituals on both nights. Esbats may also be known as lunar rituals.

While sabbats are strictly days of celebration, esbats are known as “working” rituals. This is usually the time set aside for a coven, groups or solitaries to perform magick, such as casting spells for the success of a new endeavor, healing rituals, etc.

Binding Spell

The purpose of this spell is to rid yourself of the negative energies of someone who is mentally or emotionally abusing you. If done properly, it will not harm the object of the spell nor will it affect his or her daily life in any way. It will simply make the person powerless to mentally or emotionally harm you.

Perform when Moon is dark

Materials:

Small cloth doll,(poppet) leave the head unstitched until you are ready to begin the ritual Needle and thread

Some personal item from the person you want to bind (fingernail clippings, hair, handwriting sample)

Black ribbon

Black candle

Cauldron or other fireproof container

Sterilized needle

Piece of parchment paper and pen or quill

One candle at each quarter (optional)

Ritual:

Call the quarters – I like to use candles at each quarter to form a circle of fire for extra protection. Light the black candle Concentrating deeply on the person you are binding, place the personal object inside the head of the doll and sew it shut.Tie the black ribbon around the poppet’s head, signifying the binding of that person.

‘With harm to none, my will be done

I hereby bind you (name of person)

Your words cannot harm me

Your thoughts cannot harm me

You cannot harm me’

Continue chanting this or something like it until you feel power surging through you. Visualize the person helpless to slander or verbally and mentally abuse you while you are chanting.

~ Now, to bind the spell ~

If you have a sigil or a craft name, sign it on the small piece of paper. If not, sign your own full name. If others are working the ritual with you, they too should sign the paper. With the sterilized needle, prick one of your fingers and put a small drop of blood over your signature. Again, if others are working with you, they should place a drop of blood over their signatures. (using a different needle, of course) Fold the paper, light it on fire and drop it into the cauldron (which should be on a heat-proof surface!). Meditate on the flames until the paper completely burns away. If you are working with a group, join hands at this point and feel the power surging around the circle as the spell is bound. Ground and center

Release the circle. Thank the Goddess and God for their protection and power Bury the doll as far away from you as possible within the next few days.

“You are bound to that which you bind !”

Spell to Raise Spirits

To see spirits, old European grimoires recommend mixing together aloe, pepper, musk, vervain, and saffron and burning this in a cemetery. We can adapt this for other locations (like those in which the spirit lived) by adding a bit of sweet grass or tobacco to a specially prepared incense. Create the incense on the anniversary of the death of the individual you wish to contact. This is then burned at 11 am, in the safety of a magic circle that also holds symbolic items to connect you to the entity. An incantation to encourage the spirit’s presence is:

“Guardians of the Spirit realm, hear and guide my plea.

When the witching hour rings true, bring my friend (loved one, etc.) ________ to me.

Other souls who hear my call are not welcome in this place.

Only the one known as _____ may enter sacred space.”

Repeat the request three times, twenty minutes apart, then wait quietly for indications of a presence. Signs include the scent of flowers or a favored cologne, a cool wind, movement of curtains, and candles going out or twitching erratically. Once you feel sure the spirit is with you, do not make it remain overly long. Take care of your business, say farewell, and thank the guardians for their assistance.

* Communication with and understanding the purposes of spirits:

! Word of Warning !

Spiritual entities should not be banished or called for amusement. It is best to contact a knowledgeable, experienced psychic for advice or assistance before undertaking any of these spells.

~ Timing ~

In-between times (noon, midnight, dusk, and dawn). Halloween. Seasons of late fall and winter. Moon in Libra. Eclipses. Wednesday.

Witches Fivefold kiss

This was traditionally part of the ritual between the priest and priestess, as well as part of the great rite.

“Blessed be thy feet which have brought thee in these ways
Blessed be thy knees that kneel at the sacred altar
Blessed be thy sex, without which we would not be here
Blessed be thy breast, formed in beauty and strength
Blessed be thy lips, that they shall utter thy sacred names…”

To Curse a book

“By the powers of witches and mages

By the wisdom of crones and sages

By the Moon as it moves through its stages

By Hecate and lunar rages

By the Sphinx and for the ages

I craft a curse upon these pages.”

To Beckon a Person

To beckon a someone, write the persons name on parchment paper in Dove’s blood ink, fold paper three times and put under candle holder. light a white candle that you have “dressed” in Rosemary oil and rolled in dry Rosemary leaves. If you have a picture of the person put it next to candle. Stand to the East while saying:

“If you are turning towards me
know I turn also to you,
and come to me in love

If you are thinking of me
know I think also of you,
and come to me in love

If you are saying my name
know that I say your name, and call you to me
and come to me in love

(name)
(name)
(name)”

Repeat as needed.
Timing; When Mercury rules, Moon in Gemini, Wednesdays. Leave the candle to burn out until you here from the one you call.

Witches Bottle

The Witch’s Bottle protects the Witch from all negativity for as long as the bottle stays underground. This spell is an important part of the PectiWitan focus of my tradition because once you have created your bottle, there is no need to cast a circle for protection.

Making the Bottle:

– Take a small jar and fill it about halfway with sharp objects such as pins, needles, nails, screws, etc.
– Fill the rest of the bottle with urine and perhaps a spot of menstrual blood
– Tightly seal
– Use your athame (if you have one) to dig a hole (Make sure you chose a place that is unlikely to be disturbed)
– Place the bottle in the hole and cover with dirt

Witches Bottle Chant

‘I am a witch of ancient lore, I petition these trees, and forest floor.
Converge myself upon this site, spider weaving power and might.
Air and Fire, Water and Earth, aid in my quest, I call you forth.
Aradia, Aradia, I intone, thrice the power you have shone.
Open my spiral of strength and sorcery, encompass the soul you have granted me.
Pentacle of old, stones of deep, protection around, assistance I seek.
Marry my veins, to this Earth, Cernunnos I summon you forth.
Steele needles and pins, red blood of sins.
Buried deep in clandestine dusk, liquid Venus, scent of musk.
Hear my words from Moon to Moon, cite the Lord & Lady’s Rune
By the law of three times three, this spell is done, so mote it be…..

The Pentacle

ace-of-pentacles

Phantomwise.com

The most important symbol of Witchcraft is the pentacle. The pentacle (or pentagram) is a Witches symbol of protection and positive power. The five points signify earth, air, fire, water and spirit.

The symbol of Witchcraft, The Pentacle, is a bold and fascinating statement about our place in the Universe. The pentagram represents an ancient concept that can be found in philosophical thought in both East and West. Although over 8,000 years old, the image of the pentagram is applicable in our modern world. The pentagram tells us that we have the ability to bring Spirit to Earth; this applies to every area of practical day-to-day living, as well as spiritual thought. The ability of bringing Spirit to Earth is what makes us whole.

Earth: (lower left hand corner) represents stability and physical endurance.
Fire: (lower right hand corner) represents courage and daring.
Water: (upper right hand corner) represents emotions and intuition.
Air: (upper left hand corner) represents intelligence and the arts.
Spirit: (at the topmost point) represents the All and the Divine.

Tarot Card of the Day~Four of Wands-Reversed

four-of-wands

REVERSED FOUR OF WANDS TAROT CARD MEANINGS

The Four of Wands reversed suggests there is a lack of harmony or a breakdown in communication in your family or home. There may be tension between family members or loved ones and you are finding yourself getting caught up in other people’s concerns and relationship problems. This may leave you feeling uncertain about your own relationships and what you can and cannot depend on. You may also be going through a period of transition in your family and home life and feeling some tension as a result.

Similarly, you may find your home situation becomes increasingly unstable. There may be an external threat to the peace and happiness you once had in your home. You may be placed into a temporary situation which appeases your immediate concerns but does not yet solve the longer-term issues. Depending on your living arrangements, it may be better to move home for the time being to allow things to settle.

Given the upright Four of Wands reflects stability, the reversal of this card can indicate that you are going through a period of transition where there is little stability and security. You may be experiencing multiple changes in your life, such as changing jobs, moving house and/or leaving a relationship. While you know that this is an important transition that you need to make, it can be quite unsettling, leaving you feeling out of balance and uncertain about your future.

In a relationship reading, the Four of Wands reversed reflects someone who may not be looking for a particularly long-term relationship but is willing to invest in it for the time being. There is a lack of commitment, or even a fear of commitment, which is preventing them from wanting a long-term relationship.

This one hits me right in my anxiety today. I haven’t been working for the last year because I’m pretty disabled, but when I applied for disability (the case went all the way to a judge) I was denied because I have too much education. It’s like you can’t be smart to be disabled, which implies covertly that only the ignorant can be disabled and be compensated for it. That is weird.

Anyway, I have realized for some time that I’m going to have to get a job, but the one thing that is holding me back is that I know literally no one in this town that would be able to watch my daughter while I worked. I’m so picky about who stays with her while I’m gone. I mean you have to be, right? Her safety is paramount.

I also have the land that my mother left me when she died, which includes one renter. His rent pays for my car payment, but I need other incoming money as well. I have only that money coming in and everything else going out for other bills. There is also the house she lived in on that land. I want to rent that out as well, but I have to clean it out first. My mom was right on the border of being a hoarder so there’s a lot to do still and I’ve been working on it for the last year a little at a time as my pain level will allow. I didn’t do any this summer because I’ve had the electric turned off. I can’t afford to pay two electric bills. However, now that it’s getting cooler, I may be able to go over there in the daytime and clean a little more. If I can get her place cleaned out, I may not have to get a job because that rent would cover all my other bills pretty much.

So, yes, I am in a period of transition. I have some hard decisions to make and I do feel somewhat unstable and my anxiety level has risen lately because of this. I’m a worrier. I try really hard not to be, but I am. This is one of the things I have to work on with meditation and such.

Tarot Card of the Day-Judgement

judgement

UPRIGHT JUDGEMENT TAROT CARD MEANINGS

The Judgement card calls for a period of reflection and self-evaluation. Through meditation or quiet reflection, you may come to a point of deep understanding about the common themes throughout your life and what you can do or change to avoid these situations in the future. Judgement tells you that you are close to reaching a significant stage in your own journey.

The Judgement card suggests that you have had a recent epiphany or an ‘awakening’ where you have come to a realisation that you need to live your life in a different way and you need to be true to yourself and your needs. You have opened yourself up to a new possibility – to lead a fulfilling life that serves your higher needs and that offers inspiration and hope to others. You feel as though you have had a ‘calling’ in life, and you are getting much closer to the point where you need to take action. Something that was lying dormant within you, some unconscious knowledge or truth is finally being awakened and brought into the light.

With its theme of awakening to new life, the Judgement card suggests that you have reviewed and evaluated your past experiences and have learned from them. All the pieces of the puzzle of your life are finally coming together to form one, integrated picture of your life story. This integration has healed any deep wounds and you are now in a position to put the past behind you. Your memories no longer haunt you, and you are able to understand and value what has happened to you and what it has taught you about life. Now, you are ready to confront any unfinished business in your life, clear up any misunderstandings and view the future with peace and deep ‘knowingness’ in your heart.

Judgement is about finding absolution. Through a period of self-evaluation, you will feel cleansed of your ‘sins’, wrongdoings and mistakes, and you will finally be released of your guilt and sorrow about the past. This represents a wonderful purging process and will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to take on any new challenges.

The Judgement card often indicates that life-changing decisions are required but unlike those associated with the logical Justice card, these decisions require a delicate blend of intuition and intellect. You may be at a crossroads, aware that any decision that you make will bring about significant change. The choice can be an obvious one, or perhaps the only viable one. You know that this choice must be made and you are facing it with maturity and level-headedness. Your own judgement is impeccable at this time; you can trust it completely and know that you are on the right path. If you still require clarity on the situation, look to your past experiences and life lessons which will guide you on the right path.

If you have endured challenges in recent times, then the Judgement card suggests that you may have some respite from these challenges. In fact, you may find comfort in sharing your experiences with others and healing within a group environment. The key here is that there will be others who have experienced something similar to you and who can show you the way to freedom from your troubles. Let them guide you and help you.

Biddy Tarot

Tarot Card of the Day

Five of Pentacles (reversed)

five of pentacles

REVERSED FIVE OF PENTACLES TAROT CARD MEANINGS

The Five of Pentacles reversed indicates an end to difficult times, particularly if you have recently suffered a major financial loss or job loss. You may find new sources of income, a new job, or someone has offered to help you out while you get back on your feet. You may be starting to feel as if life is worth living again and starting to regain your self-confidence. Finally you can see a way out of your financial difficulties and your hope is being renewed.

The reversed Five of Pentacles can sometimes indicate the persistence of inner, spiritual poverty. It reflects a time when you feel isolated and alone, even if surrounded by many people. You may feel as though something is just completely out of place and you are struggling to place your finger on what it is. Return to the Four of Pentacles and you may come to realize that you have placed too much emphasis on your material wealth and have neglected your spiritual well-being.

_________________________________________________________________

For the past year, I’ve been mourning the sudden and unexpected death of my mother. I moved to where she lived a year and a half ago, which was four hours away from where I previously lived, so that I could take care of her. During the last six months of her life, we became best friends. Her death hit me really hard. I’ve been feeling lost and unable to make connections here in this new place where I live. Also, since I have the beliefs that I do, and this is a small and conservative mainly Christian town, it’s been next to impossible for me to find like minded individuals. It’s not that I require my friends to believe the exact way that I do, but some open-mindedness would be nice.

I started seriously meditating in 2012 with a guided meditation by Lillian Eden meant to help people connect to their spirit guide/s. I still use that almost every day. It helps me relax and align my chakras, for one, and for two, it helps me connect with Source energy. I’ve yet to meet my spirit guide/s, that I know of. I do remember one night recently where I was in that semi-awake/semi-sleep state and kept hearing a voice saying, “I’m waiting,”. It was said in a plaintive way like the entity had been waiting for me for a long time. This card today, gives me hope that I might be able to move forward now and actually communicate with my spirit guide/s.

I stopped taking Prozac about three weeks ago which had been prescribed for me by my Psychiatrist. I actually feel less depressed now than I did while I was taking it, which is an amazing feeling. I just got diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and it was thought that the Prozac would help with the pain and the depression that comes along with the pain. Unfortunately it didn’t really help. I’m feeling much more positive now even though I’m still dealing with daily pain. I’m also thinking about getting back into Yoga, which helps with pain and with lifting the mood and would also tie in with my daily meditations. In general, I’m feeling more productive even though I still can’t do much compared to other people. It’s still more than what I was doing, which is a positive.

This card gives me hope that things really are on the upswing. I’ve been sad and hopeless and/or angry nearly every day for the past year and now I feel that I may be coming out of it. It feels like coming up from nearly drowning. As an extra, I’m going to include the link to the tarot reading by the wonderful Astrid from the Spiritual Alchemy channel on You Tube. The reading is for Taurus (which I am), but there are other readings for all other signs there and she does all of them monthly. Also, there is a lot more great information to be absorbed on her channel. I just love her.

Tarot Card of the Day: Page of Wands Reversed

page of wands

Introduction: The face cards such as the Page, whether reversed or upright, very often indicate a literal person in our lives. In this case, it can indicate a female who is younger than the querent. The reversed Page of Wands implies a level of confusion and indecision. You may be called upon to help someone decide something important.

General: Occasionally the reversed Page of Wands can depict unwelcome news that may be coming soon. This is not usually anything horrendous or dire, just something that you would rather not have happened. More often it indicates a need for focus and decisiveness.

Work: In terms of work, the Page of Wands reversed can show a woman (likely to have hair on the lighter end of the spectrum) who may be causing complications at work because of her indecisiveness. It’s possible that you are standing in your own way through your own difficulty with making a decision. If you are looking for work, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Hiring decisions may also be delayed a little longer.

Love: When the reversed Page of Wands appears in a love context, the focus may be on getting to know each other better, trading stories, etc, rather than on an immediate, serious commitment. You are well advised not to push if you are currently seeing someone but are not yet committed – the time may not yet be right. If you are looking for love, someone may warn you away from a new interest; make up your own mind. Gossip and “warnings” aren’t always true – but usually shouldn’t be completely ignored, either.

Finances: As with the upright meaning of this card, money is very likely to be headed for an upswing when the Page of Wands appears. Someone with financial expertise could come into your life and give you excellent advice. You could also get excellent financial news that you weren’t expecting. When the abundance comes, consider what you can do to share a little of it, if only to keep the “wheel of prosperity” turning.

Health: In terms of health the reversed Page points to people nearby who are ready, willing, and able, to be helpful to you in terms of your health. This can be professionals, or simply an inspirational exercise buddy or friend. Don’t try to do everything on your own. This card shows you’ll get farther being open to the understandings, good influences, and expertise of others.

Spirituality: The Page definitely points to a need to honor and listen to your own intuition. Creativity may go far to enrich your spiritual experiences now. Someone that you already know may have some important spiritual insights to share. Even if you’re usually very private about such things, consider talking to a friend or two about their spiritual “take” or experiences. This can be unbelievably inspirational.

I am the sap rising in the blossom tree just before it reveals its sticky buds to the sky; I am the riotous celebration humming away beneath the earth’s mantle of frozen sleep.

I am the rousing of the bee from its winter slumber, and the soft pad of the mother-wolf’s paw on the snow as she prepares to birth her pups.

I am hope, potential, rebirth and promise. I am the kindling breath which transforms the flicker of inspiration in your creative core into a blazing torch.

Give me the silent crescent moon rising over the sea and I will build you a bridge of silver light so you can walk up and lie in it.

Give me the frost-hardened wilderness and I will breathe radiant green life over it.

Give me the healer, the writer, the craftsperson and the storyteller, and I will replenish her essence and make her new again.

I am Brigid, Bast, Inanna and Hestia. I am the fierce protectress of the sacred fire.

Tonight I bestow my gifts of power and courage at the hearth of your soul: power to step out of the shadows of self-doubt and negativity which have held you in darkness for too long, power to shed all that which no longer serves you, and courage to clear your heart and mind for the dawn that awaits you.

I am the time to honor your unique gifts for their true worth and to protect and nurture your creative self as you would a child. I am the deep longing of the spirit which refuses to be consumed by a narrative of fear and chooses instead to place itself vivaciously on the side of love.

I am the stirring in your belly which knows exactly what you are capable of — and that it’s time the world found out.

I am the fire within which will not be contained any longer.

I am the quickening, I am the serpent uncoiling, I am Imbolc.

I am the dream of awakening.

For many in the U.S., the only ‘religious’ event this time of year is the Super Bowl. But for many pagans and Wiccans, February 2 marks the important holiday, Imbolc, and their attention may be focused somewhere other than the television screen.

3. Imbolc falls on the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Although it is attributed to the ancient Celts, ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and indigenous groups are also believed to have celebrated an equivalent holiday.

4. Nowadays Imbolc may be related to Candlemas and Groundhog Day, and indeed there is evidence from early Irish lore surrounding weather divination this time of year.

Imbolc honors the Celtic goddess, Brigid.

5. Also called Brigid’s Day, Imbolc honors the Celtic goddess of fire, fertility, midwifery and the young. Many Pagans will pay tribute to Brigid by arranging an altar and ‘invoking’ the goddess through prayer.

6. The term ‘Imbolc’ derives from Old Irish and means “in the belly,” or alternately “ewe’s milk.” The interpretation lends significance to the holiday as a celebration of fertility, reproduction and the young — all overseen by the goddess Brigid.

7. Imbolc observes the waning of winter and approach of spring. Pagans often use fire and other forms of light to encourage the lengthening of day. Seed and bud imagery may be used, as well, to promote the growth of new life ensured by springtime.

8. As with many pagan holidays, food and music are essential. Dishes for Imbolc tend to incorporate seeds, dairy and other spring-evoking foods.

Celebrants often prepare talismans to use during Imbolc ceremonies, including the Brigid’s Cross.

9. Celebrants often prepare talismans to use during Imbolc ceremonies and then keep in their homes. These include a Brideog — a small straw doll dressed in white cloth — and a Brigid’s Cross, also often woven from straw.

10. Imbolc is a time for spring cleaning. Some clean their homes, take ritual baths and de-clutter their lives in other ways. This is believed to create space for the goddess to come into people’s live and for new seeds to take root in the coming spring.
